Established in 1847 on the bank of the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. We’ve supplied hundreds of whiskey brands since, including some of the most awarded in the industry.

The water comes off a limestone aquifer under the property. The climate swings hard enough to move whiskey in and out of oak the way you want it to. The mash bills have been running here for generations.

That combination is why people can pick our whiskey out of a lineup.

1847

George Ross built Rossville Distillery where his remarkable ryes gained acclaim.

1869

A New Distilling Era – W.P. Squibb & Co opens its doors near the former Dunn & Ludlow site, and is quickly recognized for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

1919

With prohibition looming, Rossville Distillery begins producing industrial alcohol, a move that would sustain the company throughout the lean Prohibition years.

1921

The Bootlegging Begins – The King of the Bootleggers, George Remus, purchases W.P. Squibb & Co. Distillery in his pursuit of the country’s finest bourbon reserves.

1933

Surviving Prohibition, Rossville Distillery returns to its whiskey roots when it is purchased by Seagrams.

1937

After being seized by the Feds during prohibition, the former Squibb Distillery finally falls back into non-FBI wanted hands when Old Quacker Co. takes possession.

2011

MGP Ingredients purchases the distillery, and begins to acquire the sites of Lawrenceburg’s past distilleries, such as William Squibb’s.

A LAWRENCEBURG ORIGINAL.

When George Ross opened Rossville Distillery—now MGP Distillery—on the banks of the Tanner’s Creek in 1847, it was one of Lawrenceburg’s first distilleries. It was the legendary ryes crafted by George Ross that drew in whiskey loyalists and other distilling enthusiasts. It didn’t take long for Lawrenceburg to grow into the whiskey capital of the world.

George Remus, a pharmacist turned opportunist, acquired the Squibb Distillery in 1921 to run his illegal bootlegging empire. The so-called King of the Bootleggers carefully crafted his “medicinal” bourbon here—which later became part of the Historic MGP Distillery.

Throughout Prohibition, our distillery was one of the few able to withstand the trying times until America’s interest in whiskey returned.

TIME HONORED TRADITIONS, MASTERFULLY CRAFTED WHISKEY.

Today, the revival of whiskey consumption has grown exponentially throughout America. So, too, has the appreciation for a master-crafted whiskey, grounded in the quality, character and traditions of the town it calls home.

A TOWN BUILT FOR WHISKEY.

Kentucky may be known for its bourbon, but no place does rye whiskey and high-rye bourbon better than Lawrenceburg. Aside from its prime trade location near the Ohio River, MGP Distillery, and the distilleries that came before us, have benefitted from sitting atop a massive limestone shelf, which naturally filters the cold and pure water of the Great Miami Aquifer. These providential gifts lower the sulfur and iron content that negatively affect a whiskey’s taste, resulting in a bold, spicy flavor no other region can replicate.
